Hello all, it's been a while, but well worth the wait. Last night the hubby and I finally made it to 10 Degrees South after many rescheduled reservations. The weather was beautiful and I looked good...teehee. So for those that don't know, 10 Degrees South features South African cuisine.
Upon entering the establishment, we were pleasantly greeted by the hostess. Due to such an early arrival (we had a 6:45pm reservation), and only a few tables occupied, we were able to get seated in the front dining room beside the open patio floor-to-ceiling window...fabulousness. The decor is what I would describe as ethnic chic...contemporary, without pretense. As we sit, the waiter places the napkin on our laps...fancy (smile)! We review the menu...what to get...so many options...ok, 7 minutes later we've decided. Appetizers: crab pastries and lobster rolls (appetizer special)...the lobster rolls were nice, but the crab pastries...delightful...paired well with my Hook & Ladder Pinot Noir. Now, on to the main course...Maajid ordered the Ostrich Medallions and I ordered the Rack of Lamb. Unfortunately, Maajid did not enjoy his Ostrich, he did however enjoy my Rack of Lamb, or at least what I let him have...lol. I tasted the Ostrich, very weird texture. My lamb was wonderful, as were the sweet potatoes. This too went well with my Pinot Noir.
Dessert time! As the Maitre'D made his way around to each table to ensure everyone was content, he noticed we were looking at the dessert menu. He suggested Di's Delight (which had already caught my attention) and for chocolate lovers, the chocolate lava molten cake..and if we got that, said he would give me something special that would benefit my husband...at this point, I'm curious with raised brow. I ordered Di's Delight, which is a sponge cake (remarkably moist considering), with mango and passion fruit baked in, drizzled in caramel (isn't everything better with caramel), and served warm with vanilla ice cream. My husband ordered the chocolate lava molten cake, also served warm with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce. Not long after our desserts arrived, the Maitre'D, passed by our table and noticed my husband ordered the chocolate cake...told me he still had something for me, but I would have to use some of my husband's dessert...hmmm, curiosity abound. He returns with a glass of Port...told me to take a bit of the chocolate cake, then take a sip of the Port before swallowing the piece of cake...stood by, cause he said he wanted to see the look on my face...oh my, quite orgasmic!!!! He looked at Maajid and said "I told you, you would benefit from my surprise!" He further explained it was a port wine (combination of wine and brandy, typically made in Portugal) from South Africa, it's very sweet and pairs beautifully with chocolate. So his advise to my husband..."if ever you're in the doghouse, by her some chocolates and a bottle of Port wine...all will be forgiven." LMAO, but dammit if he might not have a good point!!!!
All in all, it was a great experience at a great restaurant. Even with Maajid not enjoying his entree (but certainly enjoying mine), his is not deterred. Definitely looking forward to returning again...soon!!! Next time we will try to get reservations for a later time span...to enjoy the live music on Saturday nights. This is a great choice for that special someone or a really nice dinner with family/friends. It appears you can bring your own bottle of wine and just pay the corkage fee. This is a definite must for foodies!!!!!!!!
